28 February, 2014, Shanghai. Geely Group’s new central Shanghai Design Center is the global hub of its four-studio design operations.
The facility on Guozhan Road, Pudong New District was formerly the site of the Central American Union Pavilion during the 2010 Shanghai EXPO and was chosen for its potential for growth despite its downtown location.
The 3,800 square meter studio will be home to around 110 staff – both local and international – over the coming months, as part of the company’s ongoing recruitment drive as it strives to be seen as one of the leading Chinese players.
It features three plates and full VR capabilities that allow video conferencing between studios. All aspects of the design process including creative design work, development, surfacing, modeling, full-size reviews, visualization and program management are managed from here.
This Shanghai facility, alongside its studios in Gothenburg Sweden, Barcelona in Spain and Los Angeles, is led by senior VP of Geely Group design, Peter Horbury.
“The opening of the new Design Center facility provided not only more space but also more convenient and modernized working conditions,” said Horbury. “This is crucial in consolidating the strength of the Geely team, and to promote the overall design level. The Shanghai Design Center, as the core of the global design team, will be studying and discussing the needs of Chinese customers and creating our future design DNA.”
